5 Foods to Try on your Fiji Holidays
by on 07. Jul, 2011 in Travel, Travel guide, Vacation
Fiji is known for its beautiful pristine beaches and its extensive farming capabilities on nearly every one of Fiji’s 882 islands. Sugarcane is their most lucrative commodity. Residents also enjoy: Corn, cacao, coffee, coconut, ginger, beans, pumpkin, taro, sweet potatoes, kava, pineapple, bananas, rice, copra dyers, tuna, cows, pigs and goat.
With the number of crops grown on Fiji Islands, they still import a majority of their food and beverages. In fact, $180.7 million in imported food and beverages arrive to the islands annually. Thousands of tourists every year go on Fiji holidays to relax, explore and dine on some exquisite tropical island cuisine.
1) Indulge in Fiji’s Most Popular Dish: Kokoda
Kokoda is one of the islands’ favourite dishes. The lime marinated fish is served in a half coconut and topped with lolo, a special sweet cream. This incredible dish is delectable and found in its traditional form at many of the island restaurants.
2) Select Another Island Favourite using Lolo: Palusami
Lolo, the sweet cream, can also be found in the Fijian dish known as Palusami. Chefs prepare this meal by wrapping the meat in taro leaves and then cooking the meat in the sweet cream sauce. Locals of the area enjoy this delightful meal. Tourists request this meal for their cultural edification and expansion.
3) Have a Fijian Feast with a Lovo: Seafood, Chicken or Pork
Although this is a method of cooking rather than a dish, this practice is common enough that it is work mentioning. The Fiji Feast or Magiti, as the locals know it, involves roasting a chosen meat, while wrapped in banana leaves, in an underground oven made with heated rocks. The smoky flavour is delectable and is a great way to enjoy the island.
4) Enjoy Fijian Festival Cuisine: Kassaua
Kassaua is a popular dish that is served during festivals. Baked Tapioca, cooked coconut balls and mashed bananas with cream are the essential ingredients that make this meal delectable. Indian curry is also integrated in other festival type food. The dish is often served with a compatible wine and breadfruit.
5) Try Famous Fijian Cuisine: Chicken Fricassee
This is a famous meat dish that is comprised of chicken wings and beef gravy. The beef gravy is seasoned with bread crumbs, paprika, sugar, garlic powder and black pepper. Many natives and visitors enjoy this dish while dining out in a restaurant or at home.
Fijian cuisine is diverse and delightful. Since Fiji is located in a tropical area, many of the dishes may include seafood, island fruits, such as coconut, pineapple and banana and countless other ingredients that are easy to obtain on the island. Because sugar is one of the main staples of Fiji, many of the dishes are accompanied by rich, sweet cream sauces that are often derived from island fruit. Fiji cuisine is simply delightful and should be enjoyed by all people, regardless of their geographical location. There are plenty of cheap Fiji accommodation options around the island and do not forget to make Fiji dining a part your travel itinerary while visiting the area.
